Setting TFS local folder when working with Virtual Machines

December 2, 2010

When doing SharePoint development on virtual machines, probably all members of the development team will use the same virtual image, with the same computer name.

If they use Team Foundation Server Source Control probably they want to use the same local folder for the Visual Studio solution to avoid problems with reference paths, for example c:\project\projectname.

TFS however is not their friend in this. The second developer who wants to map the same folder to the solution will receive the following error:

The path <path> is already mapped in workspace <computer>;<user>.

The solution we use is simply naming the root projects folder differently per developer, but keeping the mapped folder always right under it, like c:\projectDEV1\projectname, c:\projectDEV2\projectname, etc.
