Name ActiveX Control error for SharePoint sites

January 12, 2011

Internet Explorer may show the following warning when you browse to a SharePoint site:

This website wants to run the following add-on: ‘Name ActiveX Control’ from Microsoft Corporation. If you trust the website and the add-on and want to allow it to run, click here

This is because SharePoint uses an ActiveX control to display the presence icon. (circle in different colors next to a person’s name which indicates the online status of the user in the Messenger client)

If you don’t use Communication Server then you should disable this feature. This can be set for each Web Application separately.

  1. Go to Central Administration / Application Management
  2. Open the Web Application list
  3. Open the Web Application General Settings pop-up.
  4. Set the option Person Name Actions and Presence Settings to No
