Can’t set anonymous access to SharePoint list

March 3, 2011

The symptom:

Anonymous access is enabled to the SharePoint web application. Many lists are configured to allow anonymous access. However there is one list where it cannot be set. The Anonymous Access ribbon button in the list’s permissions page is enabled, the Anonymous Access dialog pops up but all the four checkboxes (Add Items, Edit Items, Delete Items, View Items) and the OK button are disabled.

The solution:

Check the List settings under Advanced Settings – Item Level Permissions – Read Access. If the Read Items that were created by the user option is selected, the anonymous access cannot be activated.

Above that, if you activated anonymous access earlier and now set the “Read Items that were created by the user” option then it disables anonymous access for the list without any warning…
