Open Pdf files in browser in SharePoint 2010

Unlike SharePoint 2007, when you click on a pdf file in a document library it is only possible to save it to disk or open it in Acrobat Reader. It is not possible to open it in the browser. This applies not only to pdf files but all other file types as well.

To allow all files to open in browser:

Go to Central Administration > Web Application General Settings
Change the Browser File Handling option from Strict to Permissive

To allow only pdf to open in browser:

This cannot be done on the UI, but you can use some simple PowerShell to do it:

Open the web application:

$webApp = Get-SPWebApplication "http://servername"

Execute the following commands:


Check the results:

$webApp.AllowedInlineDownloadedMimeTypes -contains "application/pdf")
