HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable. (SharePoint, after iisreset)

January 31, 2012

During of after an iisreset it is quite normal for some seconds to receive the HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable. error but sometimes this error does not go away.

If you open IIS and check the website you can see that the website has been restarted and seems to be running normally.

The problem is most likely that the IIS Application Pool of the site failed to restart and remained in Stopped state. Just start the Application Pool manually and the HTTP 503 error will go away.

If this does not help and you continue to receice HTTP 503, check this solution.

Other than Application Pool in Stopped status, There are few more reasons for Service Unavailable: HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable in SharePoint, like Password expiry, etc.

Found this checklist to resolve this error in SharePointDiary.com – http://www.sharepointdiary.com/2011/04/http-error-503-service-is-unavailable.html#ixzz2aWTwKAIM
